WHAT’S YOUR SOURCE OF TRUTH?
By Akin Ojumu
There are only two basic approaches to truth.
Historical Objective Approach
Historical objective approach to truth emphasizes God’s action toward men, recorded in Scripture, and perceived rationally. Here, God defines Himself by revealing His truth in Scripture. This approach is the authentic Christianity passed down to us by the Apostles of the Lord Jesus. The doctrines, i.e., teachings, of the Apostles are recorded in the Bible which contains divinely inspired writings.
In Biblical Christianity, truth is what is revealed by God to the believer. The Bible is the sole and final source of spiritual truth. It is the truth of God and about God revealed by God. This revealed truth of God is known and understood by those who exegetically pour over the Bible diligently.
Personal Subjective Approach
Personal subjective approach to truth places emphasis on man’s experiences as the means of defining God. This approach is irrational and subject to the individual. In this system, man defines God by his own personal experiences, intuitions, and feelings.
This methodology to truth is the underpinning of all man-made pagan systems of religion which are rooted in mysticism. It is the Mystery Babylon religion that Nimrod established at the Tower of Babel where humanity sought to elevate themselves to the status of divinity.
In these mystical systems of religion, personal experience is the primary source of spiritual truth. Truth, as understood and practiced in mysticism, is what happens to you.
At its core, mysticism is existentialism, humanism and paganism. The subjective view that truth is discerned by what happens to you is the methodology of historic Pentecostalism.
