THERE’S A COMING TAX DAY FOR US ALL

By Akin Ojumu

Today is Tax Day in America. April 15th is the day of the year when everyone who earned an income in the previous year is required to file their tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Severe repercussions await anyone who fails to file their taxes on this day or does not report their taxes accurately. The almighty IRS has the power to garnish the wages of tax defaulters.

Just like the April 15th Tax Day, there’s an even more important Tax Day coming for all mankind. A day is approaching when our taxes will come due. On that fateful day, everyone of us will be required to file his/her own tax returns without fail.

What’s different about this particular Tax Day, however, is that the due date is different for everyone. Unlike America's April 15th Tax Day, which is the same day for everyone, for this other Tax Day, each person has their own tax due date. And the Tax Day I’m referring to here is our appointment with death.

As Benjamin Franklin famously said:

“In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.”

Taxes and death are inevitable realities that all of us must confront. But I’ll even go further than Benjamin Franklin to opine that there are actually three things in this world that are inescapable. And these are taxes, death, and judgment.

Death is a racing certainty in life. It’s the consequence of the fallenness of human nature. Sin is the conduit for death.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).

With death comes a certain judgement. For some, judgment day will be a merriment day. But for others, itll be a day of weeping and gnashing of teeth. While the former receive crowns of glory and enters Gods rest, eternal fire of hell awaits the later who have chosen to reject the “free gift of God.”

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27).

Like Jonathan Edwards rightly warned in his July 8, 1741, sermon titled, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” it is an eternally perilous thing to wake up on your Tax Day to find yourself standing condemned before the Judgement Seat of God.

“Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.” (Deuteronomy 32:35).

Therefore, I beseech you today to accept the free gift that God offers you by receiving Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Savior before your taxes come due. There are no words that can accurately describe the consequence of not doing so.
