OUR GOD HEARS & ANSWERS

By Akin Ojumu

God always hears and answers our prayers. The thing is though, His answer may sometimes be a no. There are numerous instances when all we get as a response is complete silence. Does that make God evil or uncaring? The answer is of course, “No!”

As humans with a sinful nature living in a fallen world, our will is almost always not aligned with God’s will. Even more so is the fact that our humanity incapacitates us; for we are unable to see beyond the present moment and our present situation.

Blinded by our consummate desire to have it our way no matter what, a nope from God is never an acceptable answer to us. Because we’ve already convinced ourselves that what we prayed for is best for us and something that must be granted to us, God’s silence always sounds to us like He is ignoring us.

This was the important lesson that Jesus was trying to convey to His disciples in Luke 11:5-13 when, after He had taught them how to pray, He concluded with the following profound remarks:

“Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:5-13).

Our Father knows what we need even before we ask Him. Everyone who asks Him, receives what they need, but not what they want out of their greed and sinful desires. When we seek that which is in concert with His will for our lives, God has promised to grant it. To him will the door be opened, anyone who knocks in accordance with His purpose.
