ONLY A CURSED NATION MAKES ITS ELDERS CRY

By Akin Ojumu

This video is an excerpt from a speech given by the distinguished professor of virology, Oyewale Tomori, on Monday, December 6, 2o21, at the National COVID-19 Summit organized by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) in Abuja

The speech was interrupted several times as the heartbroken elder statesman, who wears his emotions for Nigeria on his sleeves, choked up in tears and wept multiple times for the rot and decay that has taken over his beloved homeland.

First, Professor Tomori unmasked the real enemies of Nigeria, which he described as the four pillars of Nigeria's under-development and backwardness.

COVID-19 is not the enemy.
Lassa fever is of minor league.
Yellow fever is yellow-livered.
Monkey pox is child's play.
Cholera is a dehydrator.
Our under-development and backwardness rest on 4 pillars.
They are the real enemies of our nation.

And they are:

(1) Lack of patriotism, the destroyer of our nation,
(2) Self-interest, the burial ground of our national interest,
(3) Corruption, the executor of our orderly development, and
(4) Shamelessness, the destruction of our national pride.

The Elder Statesman then went on to talk about how emotional he gets whenever Nigeria comes to his mind.

Mr. President Sir and distinguished people who are here,
Anytime I think of Nigeria…
Anytime I have Nigeria on my mind...
I speak…(voice choked up)…
I speak with passion…
...(voice choked with tears)…
...(sobbing loudly and profusely)…
I…
I...
I’m…
I’m…
I’m deeply emotional...
There’s fever in my body…
Pain…
(sobbing)…
Rush through my body…
And I have to hold on to something to…
To steady myself….
I have to hold to something to steady myself…
I have wept for this country on several occasions
I will try not to do so today…
But it looks like I’m failing…

No child in his right mind would consistently cause his elders to shed tears on the account of the shame and disgrace such a child has brought the family. Only wayward children persistently bring pain and heartache to their parents. And it's only a nation accursed that makes its elders cry.
