CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: FROM CONTAINMENT TO MITIGATION

As the Coronavirus epidemic takes a turn for the worse, and as it becomes clear that efforts to contain the virus to just a few hotspots have failed, public health experts and officials, who are leading the US effort against the disease, have now decided that the management of the outbreak has transitioned to the next phase of the battle. With growing numbers of infected persons and as more deaths are recorded, health officials have begun to put in place strategies to mitigate the spread of the virus. We have now officially moved from Containment to Mitigation.

During the Mitigation phase of the outbreak, local, state, and federal governments may start to implement the next line of defense against the deadly virus which is simply to keep people apart. This would include social distancing measures such as school closures, shutting down work places and allowing employees to work remotely full time, ending mass gatherings, and travel restrictions. Mitigation may also involve locking down whole communities, entire state, or a full-scale lock down of the country as it has been done in China and Italy.

Be calm, be informed, be vigilant, be prepared.
