MRS FUNKE FELIX-ADEJUMO MADE A BISHOP (PART I)
By Akin Ojumu
For reasons that would become very obvious from the reactions I know I’ll get to this commentary, I have shied away from commenting on the latest farce in Christendom. And I’m referring to the recent consecration and elevation of Mrs. Funke Felix-Adejumo to the office of a Bishop.
Well, you must know that the only reason I’m now allowing myself to get dragged into this is because someone close to me asked my opinion about it.
So, here’s what I think. This is an iniquitous charade and a public parade of haughty hearts.
What we are witnessing here, by this appointment of a woman to the office of a Bishop in the Household of God, is a violation of the Word of God. This is nothing short of an all-out assault on God Himself.
The installation of a woman to exercise authority over men in the Church is another evidence that these people, who call themselves Christian leaders in Nigeria, have no fear of God and neither do they have any regard for the Word of God.
If these people fear God at all, they would not have contravened His express command. Their flagrant action is a demonstration that either they do not know God or that they simply don’t take His Word seriously.
Had these people believed that all Scriptures are inspired by God and that the authors of the Books of the Bible wrote as they were led by the Holy Spirit, they would not have proceeded on this path of disobedience to God’s Word.
I know there are some of you who, having read this commentary up to this point, are already furious with me and are cussing me out in your mind. With righteous indignation, you are asking yourself, “How again is the consecration of a woman as a Bishop a disobedience to the Word of God?”
Let it be known, I have nothing but empathy for anyone who entertains such a thought. These folks are unfortunate victims of a corrupt Church Industrial Complex. The reason they probably don’t see the sacrilege in this parade of lawlessness is because they have been conditioned not to.
Those who fail to see the error in this woman’s elevation to the office of a Bishop are individuals who have been raised in a Christian tradition that bears little resemblance to historical biblical Christianity practiced by the First Century Apostles and Church Fathers who laid the foundation of the Christian faith.
Rather than engaging in a Salem witch trial or social media lynching of Akin Ojumu, why don’t we examine the Bible to actually see what it says about the qualifications and appointments of Church leaders and the role women are supposed to play in the Church.
First and foremost, the Bible clearly stipulates the qualifications of a Church leader. It’s right there, written in black and white, in 1 Timothy 3 and in Titus 1.
1 Timothy 3:1-2
“...If anyone aspires to the office of Overseer, HE desires a noble task. Therefore, an Overseer must be above reproach, the HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE.”
Titus 1:5-6
“This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint Elders in every town as I directed you – if anyone is above reproach, the HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE.”
Paul couldn’t be more explicit in these two passages. He makes it incontrovertibly clear that a Church leader – whether it be Overseer (i.e., Bishop) or Elder or Deacon – must be a HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE. Nowhere does it say a wife of one husband.
Now, unless and except Mrs Funke Felix-Adejumo has had a sex change and she is now a transgender male and I’m not aware of it, she is not qualified to be a Bishop and her appointment as one is a rebellion against God. And that’s not simply my opinion, it’s what the Bible says.
I’m not yet done. We’ll pause here for now and continue next time.
