CHASING GOD FOR THE LOAF OF BREAD
Welcome back from Church. How was service today? I hope you had loads of fun…or blessed beyond your wildest dreams…or whatever it is Church folks say to each other these days.
But seriously, why did you go to Church today?
What made you get up from bed, put on your bottom of the box, accessorize yourself with all those costly trinkets, and douse your body with the expensive alabaster?
What was your motive? I mean, your real motive.
JOHN 6:26-27
“Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on Him God the Father has set his seal.”
Be honest. Why do you really seek Him?
Roof over your head?
Clothes on your body?
Empty pocket?
Hungry belly?
Sick body?
Bigger house?
House rent?
Next car?
Children’s school fees?
Flagging business?
Failing marriage?
Barren womb?
Problem child?
Is it not because you want something from Him?
Are you not a seeker of signs and wonders?
Can you honestly say it’s not for the next prophetic utterance?
Are you sure it’s not for the gift and not necessarily the Giver?
1 SAMUEL 16:7
“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
It’s not that there’s something inherently wrong in coming to Him to ask for these things.
But isn’t that the main reason you go?
Are these things not your preoccupation?
Are they not your prayer points?
Aren’t these the theme of the songs you like to sing?
To what extent do you suppose your faith in God rests on a regular supply of these your heart desires?
Have you wondered where your faith will be without these things?
Without these things, will you still serve Him?
JEREMIAH 17:10
“I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Hey! You don’t have to be mad with me for asking these questions.
You don’t owe me an answer.
And you certainly don’t owe me an explanation.
Just know that neither you nor I can hide our true intentions from the All-seeing eyes of the Almighty God.
You are going to have to give an answer to Him when you stand before the Bema Seat.
MATTHEW 6:25-34
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.””
It’s my prayer that your faith will be like that of Job who, despite his many troubles, clung to God to the very end.
JOB 13:15
“Though he slay me, yet will I trust in Him...”
