I’LL CHOOSE GOD OVER MEN, EVERY TIME

By Akin Ojumu

Throughout human history, the story of those who elevate the word of men above the Word of God always has a tragic ending. It’s a calamitous chronicle of life riddled with sordid iniquities.

By choosing to glorify man, they derogate God. Those who denigrate God make Him irate. Since the protective covering of God’s mercy is not upon anyone who violates His sovereignty, such a person invites the flames of God’s all-consuming wrath.

This was the case with Adam and Eve:

“And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.” (Genesis 3:17).

Similar fate befell Saul, son of Kish, king of Israel:

“I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.” (1 Samuel 15:24).

O what a joy to choose the Word of God over men. The man who delights in God’s command, who shuns the counsel of men steeped in wickedness, and would have nothing to do with those who scoff at the Word of God, is:

“Like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers…” (Psalm 1:3).

Such were the Egyptian midwives:

“The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had instructed; they let the boys live.” (Exodus 1:17).

And so were Peter, Paul, and the Apostles:

“Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God.” (Acts 4:19).

“We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29).

There are no ifs, buts or maybe. If you ignore the Word of God, you do so at your own peril. Dire consequences await those to deify man and humanize God. They attract God’s curse, and they’ll one day suffer eternal wrath and destruction.

You must shun and ignore any command of man that conflicts with God’s express command. Regardless of his fame, stature, status or standing, any man who speaks contrary to what’s explicitly written in Scripture is a man that must be marked and avoided like a plague. For you cannot denigrate God and think there won’t be a heavy price to pay.

For me, the choice is crystal clear. I will take what God says over and above the word of the wisest man, any day. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and weakness of God is stronger than the greatest of human strength. And the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God, anyways. So, why even take the risk to defy God?
