LET THE UNVACCINATED HAVE THEIR WISH

By Akin Ojumu

In a recent Axios/Ipsos poll, Americans who remain unvaccinated say that nothing can make them get the COVID shot. When asked how likely, if at all, would they be to get the COVID-19 vaccine, if each of the following were to happen:

1. Get the vaccine at your own doctor’s office
2. Receive paid time off from work
3. Have a celebrity or public figure endorse the vaccine
4. Community volunteer discuss the vaccine with you

A vast majority of the respondents say none of these things will change their minds about getting vaccinated. No amount of paid time off or persuasion of their own personal doctor will cause them to have a change of heart about the COVID vaccine. An endorsement by a public figure or a celebrity will not work on them. A community volunteer can talk all he wants until he’s blue in the face, it’ll still yield the same result, which is “no can’t do.”

Need we say more? The result of this poll should not surprise anyone. These people are die-hard pro-dying, as Steven Colbert aptly described them. It is quite evident they want to die. The time has come to let the unvaccinated get their wish. We all need to save our breath and quit trying to persuade unpersuadable people. It is an effort in futility and an endeavor in frustration. Enough of the pleas and appeals. No more cajoling and coaxing. As they are so intent on suffering and dying, I think we should get out of the way and let them go ahead and knock themselves out.

As the Yorubas will say, “Aja to ma sonu ko ni gbo fere olode.” That is: “A dog, doomed to be lost, will be deaf to the hunter's whistle.” There’s so much anyone can do to stop a speeding train. You can only save those who want to be saved. Leave ‘em and let ‘em die.
